Bottled water is unnecessary. The bottles themselves are made out of fuel; it takes fuel to manufacture the bottles; it takes fuel to transport the bottles; it takes fuel to transport the bottles to recyclers; it takes fuel to recycle the bottles; and then it takes fuel to transport the new bottles to stores. It is much more efficient to drink tap water, which can be filtered, if necessary. Besides, carcinogens can move from the plastic into the water, so tap water is often healthier. Please make national parks a model for the rest of the country.

Thank you.

To: Regional Directors, National Park Service

On December 14, 2011, your headquarters received a memo from National Park Director Jon Jarvis outlining the Disposable Plastic Water Bottle Recycling and Reduction Program. The memo outlined the various steps that your park would need to take in order to eventually eliminate the sale of plastic water bottles in the park, drastically reducing plastic waste pollution and littering. We urge you to take the necessary steps to become bottled water free.

Sincerely,
Concerned National Park Supporters & Visitors
